Argentine/Barcelona Soccer star Lionel Messi and Father in Tax fraud Trial

This piece is hilarious, unbelievable and quite comical i must confess. It's been a norm for foreign celebs to evade tax, funny enough I dont know why!! designers Dolce and Gabbana too have joined the tax evader club.

Soccer star Lionel Messi and father are billed to appear in court on September 17 to face possible charges of tax fraud. A court in the Mediterranean coastal town of Gava near Barcelona accepted a state prosecutor's complaint alleging that Messi and father Jorge defrauded the Spanish tax office of 4 million euros ($5.3 million) between 2006 and 2009 , it is alleged that they tried to avoid paying taxes in Spain by selling the player's image rights through overseas companies.

The four-time world player of the year and his father Jorge Horacio Messi will have to appear in person for a session that will be closed to the public. The timing of the court appearance could coincide with Barcelona's opening game in the Champions League, set to be played either on Sept. 17 or 18.

The court accepted the complaint lodged by prosecutor Raquel Amada on the 12th of June accusing the pair of not paying the correct taxes from revenue earned from image rights on Messi's income tax returns from the years 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The complaint said they supposedly used a network of shell companies in tax havens such as Belize and Uruguay to avoid Messi's tax obligations.(419 tinzz)

His club Barcelona said it was not involved, as the image rights payments are independent of the reported $20 million yearly salary he receives from the Spanish champion team.
Messi used his Facebook website page to deny the charges earlier this month. See what Messi had to say

"We are surprised about the news, because we have never committed any infringement.
"We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advice of our tax consultants, who will take care of clarifying this situation."

If Messi and father are found guilty of  the charges they risk a four year jail sentence.
