There is hope and a prospective cure for Ebola as the two Americans who were infected with the deadly Ebola Virus in Liberia and returned home for treatment have been cured and discharged from the hospital.
While speaking at a news conference in Atlanta with the staff of the Emory University Hospital, Dr. Kent Brantly said, “Today is a miraculous day. I am thrilled to be alive, to be well and to be reunited with my family.” The other patient Nancy Writebol, has since been discharged from the hospital but chose not to make public comments.
The director of the Emory's Infectous disease unit, Dr. Bruce Ribner, said
“We are tremendously
pleased with Dr. Brantly and Mrs. Writebol’s recovery.” He also said they pose no public health risk. “What we learned in caring for them will
help advance the world’s understanding of how to treat Ebola infections
and help, hopefully, to improve survival” in other parts of the world.
“There may be some recovery time because
this is a fairly devastating disease,” but in general patients without
organ damage are expected to “make a complete recovery,” he added.
